Youth Olympic 2018 India’s Akash Malik became the first Indian to win a medal in Archery. India finished with 13 medals at 16 positions in this Youth Olympic. The medals are 3 gold,9silver and 1 bronze.
The 15-year-old Akash was second in men’s recurve category after losing to USA’s Trenton Cowles 0-6 in the final, who trains at the Army Sports Institute in Pune,
Akash had made a good start to the final with 10 in his first attempt, but he shot a 6 in his second attempt. He recovered to shoot another 10 in his third but ended up losing first set 26-28.
Trenton Cowles, who discovered archery by playing a video game, shot two 10s and a 9 in the second set to win it 29-27.
Akash made a horrible start to the third set with a six. He shot 10s in the next two attempts but it wasn’t enough as Cowles took the set 26-28.
In the women’s individual recurve event, Himani Kumari lost a tough five-set battle 4-6 to USA’s Catalina a Gnoriega in the pre-quarterfinals.
In the mixed international team event, Akash and Turkey’s Selin Satir finished eighth after losing the quarter-finals.
