Manohar Parrikar Goa CM died at his private residence here on Sunday evening. He has been suffering from cancer for more than a year. Manohar Parikar was 63 years old.
Manohar Parrikar was suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer, which was known in February last year. After that, he got treatment in hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York.
Chief Minister’s office tweeted on Sunday that Parrikar’s condition is extremely fragile.
President Ramnath Kovind has expressed deep condolences over the death of Manohar Parrikar.
In a tweet, he said, “I am very sad to hear the news of the demise of Goa Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar, as a symbol of honesty and integrity in public life, his service for the people of Goa and India cannot be forgotten.”
Leaders of various political parties have expressed condolences over Parrikar’s demise.
Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted, “Mr. Manohar was not Parrikar. A wise, honest and sensitive political activist was simple, I learned a lot from Mr Parrikar. As a defence minister, he helped in modernizing armed forces, smart fighter. His contribution to making the machine active will remain unique. ”
Union Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted, “I am very sad due to the untimely demise of my good friend Manohar Parrikar ji. The symbol of untainted integrity, a grassroots personality, first IIT to have become the Chief Minister of any state, the great sage of India went very soon. May soul find peace in the soul.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I was deeply touched by the news of the death of Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar, who bravely fought with a dangerous disease for more than a year.”
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, “My condolences for the bereaved family of Mr Manohar Parrikar, I met him only once when he came to visit my mother two years ago in the hospital. ”
BJP’s first leader Parrikar, who became the Chief Minister of Goa, led the state from 2000-05 and again, 2012-2014. After this, he took over the post of defence minister in the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.
Parrikar was the first Chief Minister of the country who had studied from Indian Institute of Technology. He got four times from 2000, but he could not stay for a full term even once.
