Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala Centre rushes health team

Kerala came in grip of Nipah virus, as three more suspected death related to this virus reported over the last 24 hours Kozhikode district. In this district three death already reported. The entire state has been put on alert and centre has launched a multi-agency effort to contain the outbreak.

A rapid response team from the National Centre for Disease Control, New Delhi, National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Kerala, have initiated a joint investigation into the outbreak.

Union health minister JP Nadda said that he has spoken to tourism minister KJ Alphons and Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja and assured full support to contain this by the centre.Minister said from Geneva, i have also sent a central team to assi the state government and initiate required steps.

More than a hundred samples collected from patients with suspected symptoms have been sent to NIV for confirmation.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday said although Nipah-related deaths have been reported only in Kozhikode, the entire state has been put on alert, and private hospitals have been asked to not deny treatment to any patient with suspected symptoms.

What is Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans. The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus.

NiV was first identified during an outbreak of disease that took place in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. On this occasion, pigs were the intermediate hosts. However, in subsequent NiV outbreaks, there were no intermediate hosts. In Bangladesh in 200
