What is CDS?
The Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam is conducted twice a year by UPSC for recruitment into the following:
- Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
- Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala
- Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad
- Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), Chennai – (Men and Women)
Note – Each academy offers a different career path in the Army, Navy, or Air Force.
How Does CDS I Score Help You Get a Job?
Your CDS score is the first step toward getting a permanent commission (for IMA, INA, AFA) or short service commission (for OTA) in the Indian Armed Forces.
- Indian Military Academy (IMA) – Indian Army Officer
If you have chosen the IMA as your preference and scored well in CDS, you can be selected for the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. After completing training, you’ll be commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.
- Job Role – Ground combat, administration, leadership in the Army.
- Eligibility – Male candidates only.
- Career Type – Permanent Commission.
- Indian Naval Academy (INA) – Navy Officer
A good score in CDS and preference for INA will open the doors to the Indian Navy.
- Job Role – Naval operations, marine engineering, navigation, logistics.
- Eligibility -Male candidates with an engineering background.
- Career Type -Permanent Commission.
- Air Force Academy (AFA) – Air Force Officer
Candidates who clear the CDS written exam and the AFCAT eligibility can be selected for training at the AFA, Hyderabad.
- Job Role – Fighter pilot, technical officer, or ground duty in the Indian Air Force.
- Eligibility – Male candidates with Physics and Maths at 10+2.
- Career Type – Permanent Commission.
- Officers’ Training Academy (OTA) – Short Service Commission
OTA is the most flexible option and is open to both men and women. Candidates who qualify with OTA preference will go to OTA Chennai for training.
- Job Role – Officer in the Indian Army on short service (10 years, extendable).
- Eligibility -Men and Women are both eligible.
- Career Type – Short Service Commission (SSC).
SSB Interview After CDS Result
Clearing the written exam is just the beginning. Qualified candidates will be called for the SSB (Service Selection Board) Interview, which is a 5-day personality and intelligence test. Only those who clear the SSB will be in the final selection round.
Final Merit List and Training
The final merit list consists of marks from the written test and SSB interview. Based on this, the allotment of respective academies will happen. After training, they receive their commissioning and start their job as Class-I Gazetted Officers in the Defence Forces.
