Indian Students in Iran, what happens after the War
Iran war is at full scale. There are number of Indian students who are seeking their comeback form Iran. So hom many students head Iran for studies. We are taking the look on the number of Indian students study in Iran, why they go to iran
As of early March 2026, approximately 2,965 to 3,000 Indian students are enrolled and studying in Iran (latest government-linked data from Moneycontrol analysis of official figures).

This is the most commonly cited current total across recent reports:
- Around 3,000 Indian students overall in Iran, of which nearly 2,000 are from Jammu & Kashmir (Hindustan Times, Times of India, JK Students Association).
- Pre-conflict baseline was similar (MEA 2022 data: ~2,050; 2024 estimates: ~2,000–2,500), with numbers rising slightly in recent years mainly due to affordable MBBS programs.
Iran Defeat, its impact on India
Why so many Indians choose Iran
- Mostly medical students (MBBS) — English-medium courses, low fees (~₹20–30 lakh total), and easier admission compared to India.
- A smaller number study Islamic theology (in Qom/Mashhad) or engineering.
- Large chunk from J&K, followed by other states.
Current situation after the Feb 28 strikes (as of 3–4 March 2026)
- ~1,200 Indian students still remain in Iran (mostly medical students who stayed back for crucial exams on March 5).
- Many (~900–1,000) had already returned home after earlier embassy advisories.
- The Indian Embassy in Tehran has relocated most students out of Tehran to safer cities like Qom (buses arranged, with food & accommodation). Only a small number who refused relocation are still in the capital.
- No full-scale evacuation flights yet (airspace issues), but the embassy is in regular contact, and student groups (JKSA, AIMSA) are pushing for more support.
Total Indians in Iran: ~9,000–10,000 (including students, pilgrims, businessmen, etc.), so students form a significant vulnerable group.
Indian students in Iran are almost entirely studying medicine (MBBS) — this is the clear picture as of March 2026.
What they are studying
- Primary course: MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) — a 5.5–7 year program (including 1-year internship). English-medium in most universities for international students. The curriculum follows standard phases:
- Years 1–2: Pre-clinical (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, etc.)
- Years 3–4: Para-clinical (Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology)
- Years 5–7: Clinical rotations + internship (Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, etc.)
- Why Iran? Affordable fees (₹15–30 lakh total), NMC-approved degrees (valid for practice in India after FMGE), easier admission than India’s high NEET competition, and good infrastructure.
- Very few study anything else (a tiny number may do Islamic studies or engineering, but reports confirm 90%+ are in medical courses).
Which Indian state has the largest number of students
Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) has by far the biggest share.
- Total Indian students in Iran: ~3,000
- From J&K: Nearly 2,000 (the largest group by a huge margin)
- Currently still in Iran (as of 3–4 March 2026, after strikes): ~1,200 total students remain, of which 1,100–1,200 are from J&K (many stayed back for crucial exams on 5 March).
Other states have far fewer students (in descending order):
- Kerala
- Uttar Pradesh
- Karnataka
- And a few from other states
This is confirmed across multiple recent reports from student associations (Jammu & Kashmir Students Association), Indian Embassy updates, and major media outlets. Students from J&K find Iran culturally comfortable (similar food, clothing, and affordability).
