Breaking Borders in Healthcare: Mumbai Surgeon Makes History from Shanghai-A Mumbai hospital has completed India’s first international remote robotic surgeries, with a surgeon operating from Shanghai on two patients over 5,000 kilometers away, marking a turning point for telesurgery capabilities in the country.
Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital performed the procedures on December 30, 2025, using the Toumai Remote Robotic Surgery System following approval by India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. Dr. T.B. Yuvaraja, the hospital’s Director of Uro-Oncology and Robotic Surgery, remotely conducted a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy and a robot-assisted partial nephrectomy while stationed in China’s largest city.
Technical Achievement Bridges Geographic Divide
The surgeries demonstrated real-time surgical control with ultra-low bidirectional latency of just 132 milliseconds, according to the hospital. The system, developed by Shanghai MicroPort MedBot, is the only robotic surgical platform currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for telesurgery studies.
“Remote robotic surgery has the potential to transform access to high-quality surgical care,” said Dr. Yuvaraja, who has performed over 4,100 robotic procedures. “This achievement also opens up new avenues for offering world-class treatment across India and worldwide.”
The Toumai system became the world’s first surgical robot to receive regulatory approval for commercial remote surgery in April 2025, underscoring its global significance in the field
