The Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training (CIFNET) offers two specialized, government-recognized trade courses: the Vessel Navigator Course (VNC) and the Marine Fitter Course (MFC). Both are designed to produce skilled professionals for India’s marine and fisheries sector. The selection would be through common entrance test that will be conducted on 5 July 2025 and result will be declared on 14 July 2025

Eligibility Criteria
- Educational Qualification: Pass in 10th Standard with at least 40% marks in Mathematics and Science separately. Candidates appearing for the 10th exam in 2025 are also eligible
- Age Limit: 15 to 20 years as of August 1, 2025 (relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST candidates)
- Selection: Through an entrance examination conducted by CIFNET
Course Structure & Curriculum
Vessel Navigator Course (VNC)
- Focuses on navigation, seamanship, safety, watchkeeping, marine engineering, naval architecture, and fishing techniques.
- Includes both theoretical and practical training, with hands-on experience on deep-sea fishing vessels15.
Marine Fitter Course (MFC)
- Covers marine engine mechanics, electrical and electronic systems, welding, carpentry, refrigeration, and air-conditioning relevant to marine vessels.
- Emphasizes practical skills in engine maintenance, fitting, and repairs, with on-board training
Stipend & Facilities
- Stipend: ₹1,500 per month paid by the Government of India during the course
- Hostel: Residential facilities with good infrastructure, food, and sports amenities
Career Prospects
- Those who pass out are eligible for roles on fishing vessels (deck or engine side), shore establishments, marine crafts, and can appear for competency exams by the Mercantile Marine Department for higher certifications
- On completion of VNC/MFC post institutional training will also be offered. It is based on the merit rank with stipend of Rs.20500 PM and one time uniform allowance of Rs,2500 with the bond duly signed by application/Parent
