Passing Marks

  • A minimum of 33% marks is required in aggregate (theory plus practicals wherever applicable) to pass in each subject.
  • Students must clear at least 5 subjects, including at least one but not more than two language subjects.
  • The 33% passing marks also apply separately in theory and practical exams for subjects having both components.
  • This means students need to score at least 33 marks out of 100 in theory and practical components individually wherever applicable to clear that subject.
  • For overall pass status, the aggregate of all 5 subjects (including language) must be 33% or above.

These passing criteria align with both the secondary (Class 10) and senior secondary (Class 12) courses under NIOS.

If You Fail in NIOS Exam?

This might happen but options are available for the students to re appear in the exam

  1. Reappear for Failed Subjects
Candidates have choice to reappear for only the subjects they have failed in the next exam cycle. NIOS conducts public exams twice a year and also offers an On-Demand Examination System (ODES) allowing flexible exam attempts throughout the year.
  2. Transfer of Credit
Candidate must remember that passed subjects he has passed will remain valid for credit, so candidates do not have to retake all subjects, but he/she can appear only in the failed subject making preparation easier and faster.
  3. Multiple Attempts Allowed
Students have choice to reappear up to 9 times over a 5-year span to clear any subject and improve their scores. This flexibility helps reduce exam stress and gives ample chance to pass.
  4. Readmission & Stream 2 Option
For students who fail multiple times or face delayed completion, NIOS offers re-admission under Stream 2 (open learning) to continue education without losing academic years.
  5. Impact on Academic Progress
Failing subjects delays certification but does not permanently bar students. Timely re-registration and appearance in re-exams keep academic progress on track.
  6. NIOS Recognition
NIOS certificates are recognized by universities, colleges, and government jobs across India. So, passing through NIOS is a valid alternative even after failure in other boards
