Rank or Percentage Required
What is a good percentage or rank to get admission? Looking at the previous trend, we have prepared a list according to the course. The list presented here is course-wise, as every course has a different rank; no uniform rank is accepted here.
Candidates must note that admissions are based strictly on rank (not percentage), and each subject typically has its cutoff rank that varies each year according to demand, seat availability, and candidate performance.
For General category candidates, the previous (2024) closing ranks for popular courses were:
- B.Sc. (Hons.) Geography: 23
- B.Sc. (Hons.) Mathematics: 88-111
- B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics: 99-151
- B.Sc. (Hons.) Chemistry: 145-216
- BA (Hons.) Bengali: 45-63
- BA (Hons.) English: 31-34
- BA (Hons.) Political Science: 24-27
- BA (Hons.) Sociology: 23-38
- BA (Hons.) History: 25-41
- BA (Hons.) Philosophy: 67-104
In the past, the cutoffs for General candidates were within the top 20-150 ranks for most subjects. For highly competitive subjects like Geography, Political Science, Sociology, and English, ranks below 40 are ideal for admission in the first round. For other sciences and humanities, ranks up to 100 or (occasionally) 200 could suffice, but your chances decrease as the rank gets higher.
The cutoff rank for reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC, etc.) is generally higher (meaning less difficult to secure a seat)—often by a significant margin. The exact number changes each year, so candidates should consult the official category-wise cutoff once released.
No official percentage is specified, but high accuracy in the entrance exam (usually above 60-65%) typically correlates with a competitive rank, depending on exam difficulty and the competition each year.
