IDBI PGDBF Admission

The English Language Section in the IDBI PGDBF 2025-26 Computer Based Test is designed to evaluate candidates proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and verbal reasoning.  The Syllabus includes Reading Comprehension, Cloze Tests, Para Jumbles, Sentence Correction, Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, and Vocabulary-based questions. Candidates should focus on improving their grammar, comprehension speed, and contextual understanding to score well in this section.

English Language Topics with Example  

Cloze Test

A Cloze Test consists of a passage with blanks, and candidates must choose the correct word for each blank.

Example:
The (1) of the meeting was to discuss the latest (2) in the industry.

Options for (1):
a) motive
b) agenda
c) feature
d) concept

 b) agenda (Agenda refers to the purpose of a meeting)

 Tips to understand:

  • Understand the context of the passage.
  • Identify collocations (words that go together naturally).

IDBI PGDBF Admission 2025-26: Sentence Correction

These questions test grammar, word usage, and sentence structure by asking candidates to correct incorrect sentences.

Example:

Incorrect: She don’t like to eat spicy food.
Correct: She doesn’t like to eat spicy food.

Common Errors:

  • Subject-Verb Agreement: “She don’t” → “She doesn’t” 
  • Tense Consistency
  • Preposition & Article Misuse

Reading Comprehension (RC)

A passage is given, followed by questions based on it. Candidates must understand the passage and answer correctly.

Example:
Passage Snippet:
“Global warming is causing significant climate change worldwide. The rise in temperature is leading to extreme weather conditions, affecting agriculture and wildlife.”

Question: What is the primary cause of extreme weather conditions mentioned in the passage?
Answer: Global warming

 Tips to Understand:

  • Read the first and last paragraphs carefully.
  • Identify keywords and scan the passage for answers.

Para/Sentence Completion

A part of a paragraph or sentence is missing, and candidates must select the most appropriate completion.

Example:
Sentence: Despite the heavy rains, the match _______.
Answer: was played as scheduled.

Tips to Understand:

  • Focus on logical flow.
  • Use elimination techniques for wrong options.

Para Jumble

Sentences are jumbled, and candidates must arrange them logically to form a meaningful paragraph.

Example:
Jumbled Sentences:
A) The rain started pouring heavily.
B) He quickly took out his umbrella.
C) John was walking to his office.
D) He did not want to get wet.

Correct Order: C A B D

Tips to Understand:

  • Identify the introductory sentence.
  • Look for pronoun references and connectors (e.g., however, therefore).

Fill in the Blanks

A sentence has a blank, and candidates must choose the most suitable word.

Example:
He is very ______ in mathematics.
a) proficient
b) doubtful
c) lazy
d) weak

Answer: a) proficient

Question Types:

  • Grammar-based (prepositions, conjunctions)
  • Vocabulary-based (synonyms, collocations)

Error Spotting

A sentence contains an error, and candidates must identify and correct it.

Example:
Sentence: She go to the market every Sunday.
Error: “go” should be “goes”
Correct Sentence: She goes to the market every Sunday.

Common Errors:

  • Subject-Verb Agreement (He go → He goes)
  • Tense Errors (Yesterday I go → Yesterday I went)
  • Article & Preposition Errors

Sentence Improvement

A sentence is given, and candidates must improve it by choosing a better option.

Example:
Sentence: The boy is too weak that he cannot run fast.
Corrected Sentence: The boy is so weak that he cannot run fast.

Types of Improvements:

  • Grammar correction
  • Conciseness & clarity
  • Better word choices
