Emergence and Growth of IIITs in India-Indian Institutes of Information Technology, commonly known as IIITs, are a group of 25 centrally funded technical institutes located across India. They were established with the objective of promoting interdisciplinary education and research in the field of information technology. IIITs are autonomous educational institutions that provide technical education in various disciplines such as computer science, electronics, and communication engineering, among others. IIITs are supported by the state and central governments and are considered to be one of the best information technology institutes in India.
The first IIIT was established in Hyderabad in 1998, followed by IIITs in Allahabad, Gwalior, and Jabalpur. Currently, there are 26 IIITs in India, of which five are established by the Government of India and managed by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. The top five IIITs in India are ABV-IIITM Gwalior, IIITDM Jabalpur, IIIT Allahabad, IIITDM Kancheepuram, and IIITDM Kurnool. The establishment of IIITs has greatly contributed to the growth and development of the information technology industry in India.
In recent years, IIITs have undergone significant growth and expansion. Under the 11th Five-Year Plan, 20 more IIITs were established in the country in the Public-Private Partnership mode. Additionally, in 2021, the Union Finance Minister announced an outlay of INR 9,661.50 crore for 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and IIITs, which is an increase of INR 1,166.5 crore from the previous year. IIITs have been declared Institutes of National Importance and are playing a crucial role in producing skilled professionals in the field of information technology to meet the growing demands of the industry.
