Application fee
Online application fee is Rs.600/-for GENERAL/OBC (NCL) candidates and Rs.300/- for OBC/SC/ST/PwD/EWS. The fee is non-refundable.

GATE 2026 registration extended
Minimum qualifications:
4-year Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree. in any branch of science and technology (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics), or a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree, or an equivalent degree, as per the norms of the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), Faridabad, Haryana.
At least a 60% aggregate score or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination. 5% relaxation in aggregate scores will be applicable for candidates from the reserved categories [(OBC (non-creamy layer; NCL), SC/ST, PwD and EWS (who are not under the scheme of reservation for SCs, STs, and OBCs)]. Rounding off the percentage score to the next integral value is not permissible
Other Important Requirment
The candidates must have a valid 5-years doctoral fellowship sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC), or the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), or the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), or the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), or any other Government-recognised agency. Students with DST-INSPIRE fellowship are also eligible provided the fellowship activate. Admission will be contingent upon holding a valid fellowship tenable for a period of 5 years.
Appearing Candidates-Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination in the current academic year are eligible to apply; they will get admission provisionally pending satisfactory fulfilment of the eligibility requirements at the time of joining.
Reservations of seats: 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC (NCL), 5% for persons with disability (PwD), and 10% for economically weaker sections (EWS) as per statutory norms. v Reservation of 5% seats in respect of PwD candidates shall be done horizontally, as per the Government of India Guidelines/Policy. v Reservation for EWS: The persons belonging to EWS, who are not under the scheme of reservation for SCs, STs, and OBCs, shall get 10% reservation in admission.
Candidates for the Ph.D. programme at NII will be selected exclusively through a tworound online interview process. B. The list of candidates short-listed for interviews shall be available on the NII website and the Notice Board of the Institute on 14th November 2025.
Ph.D. Programme:
Program starts on 29thDecember 2025.
The allotment of laboratories and thesis supervisors will be by 05 January 2026, purely based on the interactions with faculty members in the candidate’s area of interest and mutual preference.
JRF-All candidates must activate their Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) from their respective funding agency i.e. CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT, DST-Inspire, immediately after joining the Institute (NII).
NII is a residential campus, and shared hostel accommodation will be provided to all students admitted to the Ph.D. programme.
