General / Unreserved and General‑EWS candidates

Third‑gender category relaxation

  • Third‑gender candidates get same relaxation in fee, age, and eligibility as SC / ST / PwD / PwBD.

Exemption  from appearing in UGC NET June 2026

Exemptions from appearing in NET

(i) M.Phil degree holders
Candidates awarded the M.Phil degree as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of M.Phil./PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022 (formerly Ordinance 1989 and subsequent amendments)  exempted from appearing in the NET for eligibility for Assistant Professor in India, as revised from time to time.

(ii) Pre‑1989 UGC / CSIR‑JRF holders
Candidates who have passed the UGC / CSIR‑JRF examination prior to 1989 exempted from appearing in NET.

(iii) State Eligibility Test (SET) candidates

  • Candidates who have cleared the SET accredited by UGC for Assistant Professor before 01 June 2002 are exempted from NET and are eligible to apply for Assistant Professor anywhere in India.
  • For SET conducted from 01 June 2002 onwards, qualified candidates are eligible to apply for Assistant Professor only in universities / colleges situated in the State where they cleared the SET.

Age limit for JRF (UGC‑NET)

  • Maximum age30 years as on 01‑06‑2026 (the 1st day of the month in which the examination is concluded).

Relaxations (for JRF only)

(a) Category‑based relaxation (up to 5 years)
Allowed for candidates belonging to:

  • OBC‑NCL (Central list at www.ncbc.nic.in),
  • SC,
  • ST,
  • PwD / PwBD,
  • Third Gender,
  • Women applicants.

(b) Research‑experience relaxation (up to 5 years)
Candidates with research experience in a relevant / related subject of their post‑graduation degree may get age relaxation:

  • The research must not be part of graduation or post‑graduation degree‑work.
