Several employee associations representing staff of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have sought an official clarification from the Department of Space and ISRO Chairman over recent statements concerning the future of launch-vehicle manufacturing and space-sector operations.
In a representation dated September 4, 2026, the associations referred to reported remarks that launch vehicles may eventually be manufactured by the private sector or PSUs, rather than ISRO. They said the statements have created concern among employees, their families and young people aspiring to careers in the national space programme.
What Are Employees Concerned About?
The associations have raised concerns that a gradual shift of launch-vehicle and satellite realisation activities away from ISRO could potentially affect:
- In-house technical and scientific work
- Existing employee roles and facilities
- Recruitment to Group A, B and C posts
- Career progression and promotions
- Skill development and sanctioned manpower
- Long-term employment opportunities
They have also questioned whether publicly developed technology, test facilities and launch infrastructure could be transferred to private entities and what institutional safeguards would apply.
What Clarification Has Been Sought?
The employee associations have requested the Department of Space/ISRO Chairman to clarify whether the reported statements represent an approved Government of India policy or merely the promotional outlook of IN-SPACe.
They have specifically sought clarity on the future role of ISRO in the design, development, realisation, integration, testing and launch of PSLV, LVM3, SSLV and successor vehicles, along with the impact on recruitment, existing employees and public-sector participation.
The representation does not itself announce any government decision to privatise ISRO’s core functions. It is a request from employee associations seeking an authoritative clarification on the policy and its possible implications.
