IIT Kanpur Launches Four New Online M.Tech Programmes; Admissions Open for 2026 Session

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has introduced four new online M.Tech programmes under the second cycle of its Online Postgraduate admissions. The programmes are being offered through the institute’s Office of Outreach Activities to meet the increasing demand for advanced technical expertise across emerging sectors.

The newly launched programmes in IIT Kanpur are:

• M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
• M.Tech in Construction Engineering & Project Management
• M.Tech in Smart Grid
• M.Tech in Sustainable Energy Technologies

These specialised programmes have been developed to address evolving industry needs in areas such as artificial intelligence, infrastructure development, clean energy, and advanced power systems.

With the launch of these programmes, IIT Kanpur aims to expand access to high-quality postgraduate education for both working professionals and fresh graduates, while maintaining the institute’s strong academic standards.

All four programmes are fully online and approved by the IIT Kanpur Senate. Learners can complete the degree within two to four years, allowing participants to balance their academic pursuits alongside professional responsibilities.

Commenting on the initiative, Professor Vimal Kumar, Professor-in-Charge, Office of Outreach Activities, IIT Kanpur, said that the new online M.Tech programmes are designed to provide flexible, industry-relevant learning opportunities in response to emerging national and global requirements. He added that the programmes will help learners develop future-ready expertise while pursuing higher education with greater flexibility.

Eligibility and Admission Process

To apply, candidates must have obtained a minimum CPI of 5.5 or at least 55% marks in their qualifying degree.

Admissions will be conducted through a two-stage selection process, which includes:

1. Online entrance examination conducted by IIT Kanpur
2. Department-level assessment, which may involve an online test or interview

Applicants holding valid GATE scores that satisfy department-specific cut-off criteria may be exempted from the entrance test.

Additionally, candidates with five or more years of relevant work experience may also be considered for exemption, depending on departmental norms. Similar exemptions may apply to candidates nominated or sponsored by government departments, defence organisations, or recognised institutions.

Admissions for the second cycle are currently underway, and classes are scheduled to begin in September 2026.
