IIT Kanpur Wadhwani Innovation Centre: Kanpur, September 17, 2026: IIT Kanpur has launched the Wadhwani Innovation Centre for Life Sciences and Medical Technologies, a Centre of Excellence aimed at turning promising scientific research into practical healthcare products and solutions. The centre will receive USD 5 million in funding over five years to support innovation in life sciences, biotechnology, medical technologies, and AI-enabled healthcare services, from research and validation to commercialisation.
The centre was inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Upendra Kumar Singh, Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), New Delhi.

Centre to Support Healthcare Innovation and Commercialisation
The newly established centre will focus on high-potential research across several healthcare disciplines, including therapeutics, regenerative medicine, drug delivery, vaccines, medical devices, and diagnostics. It will also support emerging areas such as neurodegenerative diseases, mental health, antimicrobial resistance, and AI-enabled healthcare.
Building on IIT Kanpur’s research capabilities, the centre aims to help researchers move promising ideas from laboratories into real-world healthcare applications. Its support will include technology validation, intellectual property (IP) and regulatory processes, industry partnerships, technology transfer, and commercialisation.
IIT Kanpur Wadhwani Innovation Centre: Director Highlights Research Translation
Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, highlighted the institute’s biomedical research ecosystem and the role of the new centre in translating scientific discoveries into healthcare products.
He said the WIN-CoE would build on IIT Kanpur’s expertise in regenerative medicine, molecular medicine, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence while supporting technology development, entrepreneurship, and commercialisation.
Wadhwani Innovation Network to Strengthen Research-to-Market Pathways
Dr. Shirshendu Mukherjee, Managing Director, Wadhwani Innovation Network, emphasised the need to strengthen pathways that take scientific discoveries from research laboratories to the market.
According to him, the Wadhwani Innovation Network aims to connect researchers with expertise, industry partnerships, capital, and commercialisation support. The Wadhwani–IIT Kanpur Innovation Centre is part of this broader initiative to develop innovation capabilities across India.
Focus on Translational Research and Regulatory Pathways
The centre will also help researchers navigate the stages involved in converting innovations into practical biomedical products. These include:
- Scientific research and technology development
- Clinical needs identification
- Product validation
- Intellectual property and regulatory support
- Industry collaboration and technology transfer
- Commercialisation of healthcare innovations
Prof. Ashok Kumar, Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur and Professor in Charge of WIN-CoE, IIT Kanpur, highlighted the importance of creating an environment where promising ideas can develop beyond the laboratory.
Prof. Santosh Misra, Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering and Co-Professor in Charge of WIN-CoE, IIT Kanpur, noted the importance of connecting clinical needs with engineering expertise and modern technologies to develop market-ready biomedical solutions.
Workshop on Translational Research and Regulatory Pathways
Following the inauguration, IIT Kanpur organised a one-day workshop titled “Translational Research and Regulatory Pathways: Bridging Innovation to Healthcare Impact.”
The workshop brought together experts from regulatory agencies, academia, healthcare, industry, and the innovation ecosystem. Discussions focused on the steps required to take innovations from laboratory research through clinical validation, regulatory approval, and eventual implementation in healthcare.
Part of Wadhwani Foundation’s Innovation Initiative
The Wadhwani–IIT Kanpur Wadhwani Innovation Centre is part of the Wadhwani Innovation Network (WIN), the Wadhwani Foundation’s flagship innovation initiative in India.
Through a national network of Innovation Centres, WIN aims to strengthen research translation and commercialisation, helping promising scientific and technological innovations progress toward practical applications and market adoption.
