Supreme Court to Launch Monthly Lecture Series on Law, Justice and Legal Education and Nyay Samman
On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, September 5, 2026, the Chief Justice of India announced that the Supreme Court of India will launch a Monthly Lecture Series on Law, Justice and Legal Education. The initiative aims to create a regular platform for exchanging ideas and discussing important contemporary issues related to law, justice and society.
The series will follow the theme “One important idea. Every month.” It will bring together members of the Bench and Bar, academics, eminent experts, young advocates, law students and researchers for meaningful discussions on issues affecting the legal system and society.
What is the Supreme Court Monthly Lecture Series?
The Monthly Lecture Series is planned as a continuing intellectual platform of the Supreme Court of India. Each month, the series will focus on one contemporary and significant subject.
The Chief Justice of India will guide the themes, speakers and overall format of the programme. The initiative is intended to encourage deeper legal thinking and greater interaction between established members of the legal community and the younger generation.
Lecture Followed by Ideas Dialogue
Each edition will feature a Distinguished Lecture delivered by an eminent:
- Jurist
- Legal scholar
- Legal educationist
- Domain expert
The lecture will focus on explaining the selected subject with clarity, authority and practical relevance.
Following the lecture, an Ideas Dialogue will be organised. This moderated discussion will allow selected questions and participation from young advocates, law students and researchers.
This format is designed to move beyond a traditional lecture and encourage two-way discussion and exchange of ideas across generations.
Supreme Court to Create a Permanent Knowledge Resource
Another important aspect of the initiative is the creation of a lasting public knowledge resource.
Each lecture is proposed to be:
- Professionally recorded
- Supported by an edited transcript
- Accompanied by a concise Ideas Paper
Over time, these resources are expected to create a permanent archive of contemporary discussions and legal thought.
The series will also seek wider national participation through livestreaming and concise summaries, including content in Indian languages, making the discussions accessible to a broader legal and academic audience.
Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman
As part of the initiative, the Supreme Court also proposes to introduce the “Supreme Court Nyaya Shiksha Samman.”
It will be a non-monetary annual honour recognising distinguished contributions to legal education. The honour is proposed to be presented around Teacher’s Day every year to one or two outstanding legal educationists.
The first presentation will take place after the inaugural lecture.
When Will the Monthly Lecture Series Begin?
The first edition of the Supreme Court Monthly Lecture Series is scheduled to be held in September 2026. After the inaugural edition, one distinguished edition is planned every month.
The initiative is expected to develop into an enduring institutional tradition, creating a valuable body of lectures, discussions and publications on contemporary issues concerning law, justice and society.
