JNU Students Challenge UGC NET Requirement for PhD Admissions: The Debate Unfolds

Recently, UGC announced a single window for admission to PhD admission through UGC NET that is conducted by NTA for 83 Subjects.

The JNU students found the decision one-sided and says the decision is hinderance to research in dia citing exam irregularities by NTA, there will be disregard to students coming from diverse discipline. There could be discrepence in subjects and department. Finally NET does not cater to unique academic demands.

The students further says that it is recommendation of a committee and did not share the details about the composition of the committee. It would have been better if the commission had taken the thoughts of the students community on the change JNUSU expresses.

The JNUSU further clarifies how this decision is anti students, they expressed the incapability of NTA in holding the exam properly. The UGC NET is being conducted by NTA since 2018. The students alleged the issue of paper leak,delays and discrepancies in exam and results.

They expressed their concerns regarding the normalization process in the UGC NET since the commission handed over the responsibility to NTA. “Under these circumstances, the decision to make the NTA-conducted NET the exclusive entrance exam for PhD programmes jeopardizes the academic prospects of aspiring scholars,” it said.

Paper Leak case emerged in the year 2022 for history paper which was rejected by NTA. The incidence came into notice when a video circulated in social media about paper leak of history.
